Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista
The Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, opened in summer 2012, was designed with vital input from those it would serve. By integrating natural light, soothing colors and sound, its aesthetics bring the outdoors inside, creating a sanctuary of comfort, relaxation and healing. Lush gardens can be seen from corridors, waiting areas — even from radiation treatment rooms. The open design uses light wells, windows and atrium spaces unlike any other radiation therapy center in San Diego County. And the infusion center located on the second floor features a beautiful rooftop garden, allowing patients the option of receiving their infusion therapy in the peaceful open air.
"I've built many large, complex buildings, but as far as significance to the community, the Cancer Center is up there. The men and women who build buildings come and go — but what's lasting is the project. This project is bigger than any one person," said Doug Barnhart, chairman of Barnhart-Reese Construction, Inc.
As part of building a first-class facility, nearly $9 million was invested to equip the center with the most advanced technology available to best treat our patients and improve their outcomes. The center's state-of-the-art technology includes two linear accelerators, an on-site CT simulator and a 4-D radiation therapy treatment planning system.
Because of early diagnoses and advanced treatment options, for many, cancer has transitioned to a chronic disease where long-term care management is the prevalent course of treatment. With this in mind, every aspect of the Barnhart Cancer Center has been designed to support patients’ emotional, physical and spiritual well being — exemplifying the very heart of The Sharp Experience.
By incorporating healing through innovative design, advanced technology and personalized care, the Barnhart Cancer Center fosters the best possible outcomes for patients who are bravely fighting cancer.
Thanks to the philanthropic support of generous community members, $355,764 was distributed in 2015 to support technology and programs which enhance cancer treatment at the Barnhart Cancer Center.
