Coronado Hospital Foundation 27th Annual Gala:
The Foundation's Party of the Year Nets $225,000!

Dr. Peter Hanson, NBA Legend Bill Walton, Dr. Joseph Jankiewicz Coronado Hospital Foundation’s Gatsby Gala, co-chaired by Drs. Art and Lesley Huffaker was held Saturday, May 10 at the Hotel del Coronado in support of Sharp Coronado Hospital.

The Del was a spectacular setting for the Party of the Year! 1920s cars owned by Pastor David McElrath, RADM John Ruehlin Ret., and Vince Flynn set the tone as party goers were welcomed to the historic hotel. Festivities began with a silent auction and entertainment by Stage 4 on the Garden Patio followed by dinner, a medley of 1920s songs by Lamb’s Players Theater, entertainment by Sensation Showband followed by a live auction by Jack and Jim Shirey.

The Crown Room’s magnificent ceilings, the astounding decor, and white-feathered centerpieces designed by Katie Moore and meticulously hand-crafted by Katie and the décor committee all lend themselves to the dramatic flair of the Gatsby Gala!

Ladies’ outfits included feathers, sequins, fringes, long pearls, fur wraps and metallic hues such as gold, bronze and silver for that flapper look, while men wore sharp suits, suspenders, and 1920s-inspired hats!

A highlight of the evening was special guest NBA Legend Bill Walton and his wife Lori. After guests watched a documentary video featuring Bill Walton, Sharp Coronado CEO, Susan Stone and orthopedic surgeons, Drs. Peter Hanson and Joseph Jankiewicz, the basketball legend, a Sharp Coronado Hospital grateful patient, made a heartwarming speech about his positive patient-care experience at Sharp Coronado. Special remarks by Michael Murphy, President and CEO of Sharp HealthCare; Dan Gensler, Coronado Hospital Foundation’s Board chair; Susan Stone, CEO, Gala co-chairs Drs. Lesley and Art Huffaker and Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka.

The Gala is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year in support of Coronado’s only hospital. Thanks to our donors, sponsors and underwriters, the Gatsby Gala raised an approximate net of $225,000 for Sharp Coronado. Proceeds will be matched 2:1 by the City of Coronado and will support the construction of an outdoor garden and dining area adjacent to the hospital’s cafeteria; a serene and beautiful space promoting health and wellness for visitors, physicians, staff, volunteers and community members.
