Helping Babies Everywhere Get a Healthier Start

Growing Together: The Campaign for Healthier BabiesGive Now >

With more babies delivered each year than at any other hospital in California, and expectant parents referred from around the country to its highly specialized services, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns is a recognized leader in exceptional newborn care.

Our commitment to providing babies the best possible start in life begins with pregnancy and delivery and continues into infancy and childhood.

The innovative therapies we're identifying and offering for at-risk infants are improving their outcomes. And the interventions we're facilitating during their critical developmental years are creating a foundation for lifelong health and success.

We're committed to leading the discovery and dissemination of evidence-based practices that ensure healthier babies in San Diego and nationwide.

The Sharp Mary Birch Neonatal Research Institute (NRI) was launched in 2013 to offer families the latest neonatal treatments based in research breakthroughs happening right here at the busiest maternity hospital in California.

Since the NRI's inception:

Impact of Neonatal Research Institute

The NRI has conducted more than 30 clinical trials of innovative therapies and new medicines for preterm infants, including a study proving that delayed umbilical cord clamping provides babies additional health benefits and resulting in a recommendation by The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to standardize the practice.

The institute has earned the support of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand its work and impact, most recently through an international study at nine sites analyzing the outcomes of umbilical cord milking versus delayed cord clamping.

The discoveries happening at the NRI are improving care for infants across the country and have the potential to bring healthier lives to babies worldwide.

The Nemeth NICU Follow-Up Clinic at Sharp Mary Birch promotes optimal growth and success for babies born preterm through assessments and interventions that ensure they meet developmental milestones throughout childhood.

The clinic's compassionate treatment and support services for children and families validate the long-term results of the hospital's innovative studies and give patients the best possible chance to grow into healthy, school-ready learners who thrive.

As a not-for-profit community hospital, philanthropy is essential to making these programs and discoveries possible for Sharp's tiniest patients as well as newborns around the world. Give now to help babies everywhere get a healthier start.

A group of grateful patients and passionate community members recently came together to create Sharp's first official peer-to-peer fundraising campaign in support of Growing Together. Explore their stories and support their efforts.
