Inspired Giving: The Jean Collins Story
With a very special occasion approaching, patient Jean Collins was hopeful for a quick recovery.
After undergoing knee replacement surgery at Sharp Coronado Hospital, she began therapy with James Rose, Physical Therapy Supervisor at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Center Sorrento Mesa. Jean shared her recovery goal with James at their very first meeting—to be able to walk again in time for her granddaughter’s college graduation.
“The therapy was painful at first and I was scared, but James was very encouraging and his exercises worked,” said Jean. She added that his warm and personable nature made all the difference in her healing process. He shared with her his love of rose gardening and pride in his son’s accomplishments and they even compared notes on the latest Dan Brown book.

A few weeks into physical therapy, Jean was able to complete a full pedal revolution on a stationary bike. Then, after just over two months of work with James, she met her goal.
“I was able to walk to all of the graduation events without any assistance or discomfort,” said Jean. “James has truly been my Guardian Angel for the past 11 weeks and I am very grateful to him. Sharp Rees-Stealy is fortunate to have him on staff.”
Longtime supporters of Sharp Rees-Stealy and the entire Sharp system through leadership on numerous boards and committees as well as generous gifts, including a gift to name the second floor lobby of the new Sharp Rees- Stealy Medical Center Downtown, the Collins family continued their tradition of grateful support with a Guardian Angel gift in honor of James and the exceptional care he provided Jean.
James was surprised with his first Guardian Angel pin in front of his staff and his supervisor, Director of Occupational Health and Rehabilitation Services at Sharp Rees-Stealy, Joseph Marty. “It was unbelievable to be presented with this honor,” said James. “I was thrilled that my director was present and that I was able to serve as an example to my staff.”
