Minimally Invasive Technology Enhances Care for San Diego Women
Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns provides exceptional women’s health care for patients at all stages of life.
The hospital offers the latest in technology and minimally invasive treatments for women’s surgeries including hysterectomies, and treatment for gynecologic cancer and female pelvic disorders. More than 1,000 of these procedures have now been performed, many using the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. This state-of-the-art system allows surgeons to complete complex procedures through small incisions using magnified views and tiny robotic instruments.
A generous gift of $3 million from John and Carole Sachs made the purchase of the system possible in 2009, and continued support from donors has allowed Sharp to maximize the technology with purchases of new scopes, arms and add-on equipment as it is developed.
“The new equipment is able to articulate into small places and allows physicians to view what they could not before,” said Donna Label, Director of Surgical Services at Sharp Mary Birch. “Surgeons can now achieve with a little incision what previously required major surgery. This significantly decreases recovery time and scarring for patients — making their hospital stays shorter and their return home quicker.”
